I have a satin base on all of my walls. Gives them a hint of light reflection and very easy to clean. Flat paint is awful to clean.

you can use latex paint anywhere and it doesn't stink as bad as oil

You should be more concerned about the gloss than the type of paint. Latex enamel paint will provide everything that oil will and it is a lot easier to clean-up.


The higher the gloss, the more durable the surface will be. So if you want to be able to wash or scrub the wall, then use a semi-gloss or gloss. If you don't like the sheen, but want to be able to wash it, there are some high quality egg-shell paints that will work.


If your walls have a lot of imperfections you might want to consider flat paint. And instead of washing the wall you will have to touch-up with a brush. When you buy your paint, ask the salesman the pros and cons of the different paints and they can direct to you to what will serve your needs best. Hope this helps.
no don't use oil base paint in ceilings you use latex paints
you should use a good quality latex on both ceiling and walls, unless you need to block staining. if you have stains like watermarks, ink , tobacco, etc. use a oil base primer first then a latex top coat. Oil base enamels are nice for doors ,base and other wood trimmings
Oh.. I would NEVER NEVER use oil based paints on the ceiling. You can use latex on the walls.... My favorite is a latex(water based) paint on the walls(for example color X) and it is to be a satin finish. Then I use the sme color X on the ceilings but Flat... be very careful when using paint and you know, oil based is hardly used anymore at all. The only place I use semi-gloss is in the bathrooms.
I use semi gloss on the ceilings and walls, it is durable and washable.
only use oilbase if ceiling is pimpled......chirp!
